Commands were shouted back and forth across the palm grove as four U.S. Soldiers emerged through the wall of concealment in full sprint to their next covered position in a trench dug between two rows of palm trees. The Soldiers took up their ready positions and provided cover fire, allowing the next team to advance toward the objective.

Aside from the crowd of Iraqi Army (IA) officers and Soldiers observing from a footpath beside the rows of trees and trenches, blank firing adapters were the only indication that the event unfolding before their eyes was a training demonstration.

Soldiers from B Company, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment “Gimlets,” 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, provided a demonstration of platoon movement techniques in a woodland environment on Sept. 30 at the request of senior ranking IA officers in the Diyala Province. The purpose of the demonstration was to show the IA officers in attendance the training their Soldiers would be receiving in the following month of October.

“We’re conducting a demonstration of some infantry platoon maneuvers in a densely vegetated environment,” said Capt. Rustin Jessup, a Benton, Ark. native, and the company commander for B Co., 1-21 Inf. Reg. “The purpose of the demonstration is to give our IA counterparts an introduction into what training we’ll be providing them in the next month, specifically the 5th IA Commando Battalion.”

The demonstration began with an introduction by Capt. Jessup as to what the IA commanders should expect to see immediately following the briefing. A field expedient terrain model was constructed from bricks and other natural elements from the environment to depict a rudimentary map of the palm grove and surrounding landmarks. Plastic, color-coded toy Soldiers were used to illustrate U.S. and Iraqi troop locations in relation to simulated enemy forces, the mission being an assault on the enemy stronghold within the densely vegetated orchard.

“We’re showing the IA commanders how to effectively conduct an operation order using a terrain model as a graphic structure,” said Sgt. 1st Class Randy Robertson, a Sacramento, Calif. native, and a platoon sergeant for B Co., 1-21 Inf. Reg. “We’re actually doing a clearing operation that turns into a react-to-contact drill.”

“The senior Iraqi officers will be standing off to the side while we do it,” he said. “We have several interpreters who will interpret the actions that are taking place during the event.”

The core of the training will consist of basic military fundamentals such as the importance of constant situational awareness, communication and Soldiers maintaining their individual sectors of fire. These simple skills are imperative in mastering the more advanced tactical movements that will also be taught.

“Once we make contact we’ll do a basic react to contact drill,” Sgt. 1st Class Robertson said. “We’ll send one squad in to support by fire while another squad flanks across the objective. The support-by-fire squad will then sweep toward the objective, completing the exercise.”

The Gimlet platoon hopes to instill in their IA counterparts the confidence that each Soldier will perform his duties as required when he is called upon to do so. An admirable quality possessed by U.S. Army Soldiers that may be taken for granted at times is the dedication to ensuring no Soldier is left behind, another underlying theme that will be stressed during the training cycle.

“We’re going to incorporate a couple simulated casualties as well to teach them to take care of their wounded and not just leave them on the battlefield,” Sgt. 1st Class Robertson said.

The training site that will be used is an abandoned palm grove farm near Ba’qubah in the Diyala Province, provided by the IA for training purposes. The orchard will be transformed into a simulated battlefield to assist in the IA’s next step toward self-reliance in full-spectrum security operations.

“The IA has been conducting palm grove clearance operations the whole month of September,” Sgt. 1st Class Robertson said. “They believe insurgents or al-Qaida in Iraq have set up operations inside the palm groves.”

The necessity for training on clearance operations in a rural environment spawned from a recent IA clearance mission in a palm grove in which IA Soldiers suffered the losses of several officers while assaulting a smaller force of insurgents. The operation spanned six days and caused IA commanders to reassess their approach as the IA focus shifts from urban to rural environments.

“Iraqi Army forces were pinned down by a small group of insurgents and it took them like six days to get the palm grove cleared,” said Sgt. 1st Class Robertson. “So this is like the repercussions of that because they needed better training on how to clear palm groves.”

This is not to say that the past seven years of U.S. and Iraqi joint security missions, and the countless days spent training, have been for nothing. This new training is necessitated by a drastic change in environment. The IA troops have recently pushed the majority of insurgent forces beyond city boundaries, causing them to take refuge in secluded wooded areas like the palm groves. Iraqi Army Soldiers have proven that they can operate tactically in urban locales, and this training will give them the tools to effectively conduct missions in rural environments as well. The end result will be an Iraqi Army fully capable of defending its country from enemy forces in any situation.

“This training contributes a lot to the independence of Iraq because most of the fights now have come out of the cities and into smaller villages and palm groves like these,” said Spc. Owen Sablan, a Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands native, and a radio-telephone operator with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-21 Inf. Reg.

Individual Soldiers working collectively toward a common goal, a concept new to IA Soldiers, proved to be a key factor in the Gimlet platoon’s successful completion of the training demonstration. As the B Co. Soldiers communicated across the training area and executed rapid, precise movements until they reached the objective, the Iraqi commanders appeared to interpret the tactics demonstrated as a skill set vital to achieving victory in a new operational environment.
Despite the vacancy, the classrooms had many new additions. Rows of desks created straight lines across the rooms, with tables at the front of each room fit for an instructor. A small, empty field with a soccer goal at either end alluded to the location of many future games. At the entrance to the school grounds, a bright red ribbon hung between the fence posts, glimmering in the sun.

Two pairs of hands grasped the scissors, parted the blades and closed them around the ribbon, snipping it in two. On Sept. 20, the Al Samad grade school was officially re-opened after months of renovation.

Immediately following the ribbon-cutting for Al Samad, Lt. Col. Donald Brown, the battalion commander for 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, and Arif Mutter, from the Tikrit City Council, toured the school before moving to a building adjacent to the schoolyard where a second red ribbon awaited them. The Abeer Ul-Mar’ah Institute for Women was also opening its doors for enrollment.

Both schools, located in Al Alam in the Salah ad Din Province, Iraq, were projects 2AAB, 25th Inf. Div. inherited from previous units, so the brigade’s involvement was limited to tracking the projects and ensuring the contractors produced quality work that adhered to their timelines.

“The brigade’s role was to make sure we track everything that we inherited and to close those contracts out,” said 1st Lt. Matthew Wolfe, an Orlando Fla. native and the civil affairs officer for 1-27 Inf. Reg. “Since we didn’t have initial ownership of this in the entire process we needed to find the statements of work and make sure these contractors were building and delivering the product they were contracted with.”

Al Samad will have standard curricula teaching children the core courses found in any other grade school. The Abeer Ul-Mar’ah Institute for Women is a vocational institute designed with the intention of teaching women viable skills that will make them competitive in certain occupational fields.

“Abeer Ul-Mar’ah Institute for Women was a partnership between the University of Tikrit and the Tikrit City Council,” 1st Lt. Wolfe said. “It’s like a vocational school for women who want to learn certain skills like sewing and working with computers.”

“That’s what it’s specifically designed for, to give women without opportunity the skills to be able to work in Iraq,” he said.

Admission for the women’s institute is free, and eligibility for enrollment into the grade school is based on zoning guidelines similar to those in the United States. Children can be enrolled in Al Samad provided that they fall into the school’s zoning perimeters for that district.

The Warrior brigade, in true advise-and-assist fashion, assumed a supervisory role while the city of Tikrit delivered these schools to its people to meet their needs. Through the working partnership between the University of Tikrit and the Tikrit City Council, the women’s institute is shedding another ray of light in the dawn of a new, self-reliant Iraq.

Two small children approached Lt. Col. Brown following the ribbon-cutting ceremony carrying large bouquets of flowers expressing their gratitude to him and the “Wolfhounds” for their assistance in ensuring they have a place to learn and grow. Though the battalion’s involvement in the projects was limited, there was a sense of gratification felt by those present for the momentous openings of these educational institutions.
His witty punch lines have the crowd in an uproar, granting him a thunderous round of applause at the end of his routine.

Derek Vana, a stand-up comedian from New Hope, Penn., was part of a comic trio that toured several forward operating bases in Iraq during the month of September, putting on shows for Soldiers from 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, for the sole purpose of entertaining troops and helping them enjoy an evening despite being deployed.

Lone Wolf Entertainment, an entertainment booking company out of Dickinson, Texas, hired Scott White and Bill Dykes from Houston, Texas, and Derek Vana to come to Iraq to provide comic relief to deployed Soldiers. The three comedians submitted tapes of their routines to the entertainment agency, and after review, Lone Wolf Entertainment booked them for the tour.

Dykes enjoys performing for deployed troops. He is a seasoned visitor to Iraq, as his passport would indicate, and a FOB Warhorse alumnus.

“Our whole reason for coming out here was the Soldiers,” Dykes said. “It’s definitely not for the sight-seeing.”

“I’ve been here actually, this venue at FOB Warhorse, two and a half years ago,” he said. “I recognized it at the dining facility when I saw the Stevie Ray Vaughn room I’m like, ‘That’s where we ate!’”

When the comedians are not performing for troops, they do the same thing stateside for their civilian audiences, minus the body armor and Blackhawk helicopter transportation. Though their duties are not as life-threatening, the comics can relate to Soldiers in that their jobs require them to travel and occasionally take their routines on the road. Each of them deals with separation from family and friends as Soldiers do, though on a much smaller scale.

“It’s not so hard for me being away because my wife and I are used to text messages, phone calls, e-mails, stuff like that,” Vana said. “The accessibility in the states is really easy, I can always text her, I can always call her.”

“I have a cat, and he gets pretty mad when I leave him for long periods of time,” Dykes said.

Though Dykes’ support may come in the form of feline companionship, he had a few words of encouragement for Soldiers experiencing difficulty with the separation from loved ones back in America.

“Despite the distance, people are still there with you, and it’s hard to remember when that connection is so spaced out, but it’s still there,” he said. “You just have to value the fact that you have it and hold onto that as opposed to thinking in the moment.”

Vana served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1998 to 2001, and though he may not have served during Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom, he shed some light on the issue of separation from a different perspective.

“It’s almost as hard for families back home as it is for the Soldiers here too,” he said. “Soldiers here have their family, their platoon, their company.”

“For people back home, it might just be them, they just have their small group of friends,” he added.

Soldiers filed out of the theater following the conclusion of the show, still laughing about various jokes told throughout the night. Despite the fact that being deployed is no laughing matter, Soldiers still managed to relax and enjoy themselves.
Spectators cheer as fists of fury deliver punches in bunches. Some are blocked and others make direct contact. Kicks are added to the mix, with both contenders fighting as if their lives are at stake.

After two rigorous rounds, one warrior emerges victorious, and the loser passes the controller to the next contender.

Competitors gathered in the game room at the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facility at Forward Operating Base Warhorse, in Iraq’s Diyala Province, Sept. 4, for a tournament to determine the Super Street Fighter IV master.

Sergeant Steve Thompson, a Fayetteville, N.C. native and paralegal noncommissioned officer for the 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, coordinated with MWR to reserve the game room and gaming equipment, including five televisions, five PlayStation 3’s (PS3’s) and 10 controllers.

“I am the tournament administrator; I set everything up and supplied the games from Amazon,” Sgt. Thompson said. “I had to make arrangements with MWR to reserve the game room for the night, make sure all the PS3’s were available and the room would be clear.”

The tournament consisted of a double-elimination bracketing system with two victories advancing a competitor to the next round of play-offs, while two losses disqualified a player from the tournament. The final match was a single-elimination, best of four rounds with a single fighter, to determine the champion.

“The winner will receive bragging rights, the number one headband and the responsibility of defending that title all the time,” Sgt. Thompson said.

The headbands, a status symbol and coveted tournament prize, allowed competitors to distinguish the top two fighters from the rest of the pack, and will be used long after the tournament has ended, as a hierarchal ranking system among the elite players.

“I ordered two headbands representing the number one and number two players,” Sgt. Thompson said. “Anyone can challenge the holder of the number two headband, but only the number two headband can challenge the number one for the title.”

“It’s an on-going tournament,” he said. “This is just to determine who are the number one and number two, and after that you have to defend your title from there.”

Sgt. Thompson had a plethora of games to choose from, spanning several genres, but he said it was a simple choice of picking Super Street Fighter IV for the tournament.

“It’s an awesome game, the competition is great, it’s like an elaborate game of chess, and I love chess to begin with,” he said. “Basically everyone was playing Super Street Fighter IV, so I picked a game everybody likes.”

The tournament had a relatively high visibility on FOB Warhorse and entrants were simply required to show up.

“I’m expecting maybe 20 people tonight, and then as word spreads there will probably be more the next time around,” Sgt. Thompson said. “I posted signs everywhere, so people can just show up and sign in on the roster.”

Aside from the desire to establish a Street Fighter champion, Sgt. Thompson said video games play a major part in maintaining the morale of deployed Soldiers.

“It’s a hobby, and what we’re dealing with, all kinds of crazy stuff, at the end of the day, you need that release,” he said. “It keeps you going, gives you something to look forward to and makes the time fly, and the quicker we get out of here the better.”

His duties as a paralegal NCO always take precedence, but outside of his U.S. Army career, Sgt. Thompson’s focus is on his love for video games, which he developed at an early age.

“I’ve been playing games since I was eight or nine, starting with my Super Nintendo,” Sgt. Thompson said. “Super Mario World was my first game and I’ve been hooked since then.

“I’m a dedicated gamer, it’s my life,” he said. “I have my Army life and then there’s this.”

Brand loyalty is a common trait among many dedicated gamers and with the exception of his Super Nintendo, Sgt. Thompson adheres to this unwritten rule.

“I own a PS3,” he said. “I’ve always been a Sony fan since the PSOne first came out.”

Time spent is experience earned with regards to gaming, so when he’s not processing legal actions for 2AAB, 25th Inf. Div., Sgt. Thompson invests the majority of his spare time in his PS3, especially when bragging rights and a championship title are on the line.

“Out here, I might spend four or five hours playing, depending on what I’m preparing for,” he said. “With something like this tournament, yeah I’ll spend a lot of time on my PS3.”

Ryan S. Smith, an Austin, Texas native and MWR coordinator with Kellog-Brown and Root, also competed in the tournament, but arrived with much less training time.

“I hadn’t played Street Fighter in about six months,” Smith said. “I mean, I played a couple warm-up matches when I got there to remember what I knew; it’s muscle-memory baby!”

Sgt. Thompson pitted his best fighter against the strength of Smith’s muscle-memory in a brutal final bout. In the end, the title went to Sgt. Thompson.

“For the finals, it was just a hardcore grudge match, and Steve definitely brought it,” Smith said. “But I’ve got something for him next time I see him.”

While Smith, holder of the number two headband, is the only person authorized to challenge Sgt. Thompson for the title, Sgt. Thompson has a message for anyone with enough confidence in their Street Fighter prowess.

“Anybody who wants it can come get it,” he said.
Staff Sgt. Raymond Ostil has redefined this term based on his environment.

Staff Sgt. Ostil, a Hayward, Calif. native and paralegal noncommissioned officer for 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, is a music producer and recording artist that brought his talent and tools with him to Iraq.

Being deployed was not going to stop Staff Sgt. Ostil from indulging his creative passion; he packed all the necessary equipment in overseas containers that were shipped to the Middle East.

“I knew I wanted to bring my studio because it was just sitting in my house, and I wanted to do something creative with this stuff,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said.

This “stuff” comprised a laundry list of professional-quality recording tools that help him capture, place and edit audio in a digital format. The costly equipment required three large, plastic storage boxes for packing and shipping.

“I brought my keyboard, which is a Roland EM305, my Macbook Pro and my Akai MPC 1000 for sampling and drumming,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “I also brought two studio monitors, a mixer, an MBOX 2 for audio interfacing, a terabyte external hard-drive for storage, studio headphones and an AKG Perception microphone with microphone stand.”

Staff Sgt. Ostil noted the time and effort he invested in securely packing the various monitors, sampling tools and seemingly endless supply of cables that were required to make the studio fully operational. In contrast, he also said the unpacking and set-up process was much easier.

“I brought a lot of records for sampling and a lot of cables,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “Packing it all up was hard, but when the container arrived in Iraq, it took me no more than 15 minutes to put it all together.”

The set-up has a complex appearance with enough buttons and dials to intimidate novice producers, but with some formal training on how to utilize the equipment effectively, Staff Sgt. Ostil said that anyone can master the art of producing music digitally.

“It’s really easy to do, anybody can do it,” he said. “You spend the money to get the equipment, you go to school and play around with the equipment and learn how to use it.”

Staff Sgt. Ostil said he started buying all his current sampling and editing equipment in 2004, but he has been rapping since he was 17. Funds for professional equipment are typically difficult to acquire at that age, so Staff Sgt. Ostil used the tools that were available to him at the time.

“I used to make beats myself – I’d take a tape recorder and beat-box into it while it was recording, then rap over it,” he said.

The quality of the recording and editing equipment used is of no consequence if the producer lacks the creative mind and ambition to put it to good use. Fortunately, Staff Sgt. Ostil draws from his own experiences as well as the talents of musicians around him, striving to constantly improve as an artist as well as a producer.

“I’m inspired by life, but I’m influenced by other musicians,” he said. “It doesn’t even matter what kind of music they play.”

“I just like to be surrounded by talent,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “If the people I record with are good, it makes me want to be better as an artist, too.”

Inspiration coincides with creative talent to form unique sounds, but creating a beat, the instrumental basis for a song, is much easier said than done. Staff Sgt. Ostil will use samples, sound segments from existing songs, to create a starting point for his beat. The complexities lie in the editing and fine-tuning, which Staff Sgt. Ostil said can span several weeks.

“I can lay down the simple foundation for a beat in a couple minutes, but to be happy with it and make it sound like it belongs in a song, that takes forever,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “I have beats that I have been working on for weeks that I haven’t finished.”

After he fine-tunes an audio file, Staff Sgt. Ostil stockpiles his beats, raps over them and offers them to other vocalists that need background music.

“I play my samples for other people so they can rap to them, too,” he said.

Staff Sgt. Ostil has worked with a number of Soldiers in 2AAB, 25th ID, providing beats and even recording with them. Major Matthew Vinton, a Burke, Va. native and the officer in charge of the Legal office for 2AAB, 25th ID, collaborated with Staff Sgt. Ostil on a few songs.

“It just so happens I play bass guitar, and I have since high school,” Vinton said. “We decided to merge our creative efforts and throw together a couple songs with Hawaiian-themed background music.”

Modern music trends require producers to be versatile and open-minded, and Staff Sgt. Ostil fits that mold like a glove. He listened to a variety of artists from different genres growing up, from The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac to Marvin Gaye and Tupac Shakur.

One of the qualities that sets Staff Sgt. Ostil apart from most modern artists is the intrinsic message in his music. It’s not about the money or the fame; his songs, inspired by his own challenges, tell stories with deeper meanings than those that can be dismissed at face value.

“Once you step into that rabbit hole and you realize that making music is relatively easy to do, you’re surrounded by a bunch of people who know it’s easy to do and they want to do it too,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “It’s like a bucket of crabs; everyone is climbing over each other trying to get to the top and gasp for air.”

“Anyone can go out and get the equipment, but at the end of the day, are you putting out a message?” he questioned rhetorically. “Are you saying something to somebody or do you just want people to hear your voice?”

Staff Sgt. Ostil has no specific audience in mind when he writes and produces his music, but he said certain songs will strike a chord in people that can relate to the meaning of his lyrics.

“I have a song called ‘Looking For Soul’ where I’m mostly talking to my son who is five years old, and I guarantee you, there’s another kid out there who is like 13 years old in California or Missouri that can relate to it,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said.

There is an obvious appeal in being able to touch a wide audience through an alternative form of communication, and Staff Sgt. Ostil said that was one of the driving forces behind his initial interest in producing music. He also said he finds gratification in providing other Soldiers with an outlet that allows them to figuratively escape the stress of being deployed.

“What made me want to get into it was that I can express myself this way and it gets the message across,” Staff Sgt. Ostil said. “You can reach somebody through music more easily than just through spoken words.”

“My number one payoff is when people come over here, make some music and they leave happy,” he said. “They forget that they’re in Iraq for just that short amount of time.”
Two guitars wailed on either side of the man on the keyboard, a drummer pounding away behind them all. With a climactic finish, the pianist turned to address the crowd.

“It is an honor to be here with you this evening,” said Nathan Lee, a rock pianist and lead vocalist from Bangor, Penn. “We came here with a great deal of respect in our hearts for what you do for us.”

The musician and his band from Nashville, Tenn. played a show for 2nd Stryker Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division soldiers August 6 at Forward Operating Base Warhorse, Iraq. Soldiers gathered around the main stage to hear the band crank out songs from their album titled “Risk Everything.”

Nathan Lee possesses a unique sound, blending electric and bass guitar, drums and piano to produce melodic ballads like “Bring Down the Fire,” and upbeat, edgier tracks like “High Speed Low Drag.”

“It’s piano pop-rock,” Nathan Lee said. “I always call it Jersey rock because then it kind of dials it in for people.”

This Jersey rock has been rolling along for over 20 years, adapting and perfecting his style, drawing from life experiences to fuel his creative fire. Hard times, including living out of his car, have served to make Nathan Lee a stronger person and an artist that performs with conviction.

“I’ve been playing since I was 11, and decided to really go after it when I was 16, and I’m 35 now so it’s been a long road,” Nathan Lee said.

“I take from life, it depends on the day,” he said. “For me a lot of it is about the hard times, I’m definitely in that category that writes about the hard times and getting through it.”

Though the basis for the unique sound is centered around the piano and Nathan Lee’s vocals, it simply wouldn’t be possible without his bandmates’ artistic talents on their respective instruments. Joey Sanchez shreds the drums while Gregory Everett takes his cue on the electric guitar. Josiah Holland demonstrates his expertise on the bass guitar and lends backup vocals.

“We have been playing together for about a year and a half, and Greg jumped in because our other guitarist heard about the Blackhawk ride and said ‘No way!’” Nathan Lee laughed. “So we made a little switch and Greg jumped in to play with us.”

Though the band has been playing together for a year and a half, and Nathan Lee has been playing for over 20 years, this is the first time any of them have been able to play for troops overseas, something the leading man has been trying to coordinate for almost a decade.

“For nine years I’ve wanted to come out and play for troops, and it never worked until now,” Nathan Lee said. “And the way it all came together is Joey works with a company called Ultimate Ears and they were our sponsor for this run.”

“Ultimate Ears actually sponsored us and gave us 1,000 sets of earphones and copies of our album to give out to the troops,” said Joey Sanchez, the percussions specialist for the band.

The trip began in Minneapolis, Minn. where the band rehearsed their performance and tuned their instruments. Nathan Lee and company then boarded a flight and ultimately ended up at Camp Buehring in Kuwait where their Middle East tour began.

“I think it’s a total of a two-week run,” Nathan Lee said. “We started in Minneapolis to dial in the sound, then into Kuwait where we played a show for the troops there, and then it was about three days of ‘hurry up and wait.’ We’ve had about six hours of sleep in the last four days but we couldn’t be more excited to be here.”

The band wrapped up their performance, and as they began to pack their gear for the trip to Mosul, Iraq, for their next show, Lt. Col. Scott Murray, the battalion commander for 225 Brigade Support Battalion, 2SAAB, 25th ID, presented each member of the band with 25th ID hats and certificates of appreciation to commemorate the band’s performance at FOB Warhorse and to express the unit’s gratitude.

“On behalf of the soldiers, I’d like to express my personal appreciation for you guys coming out here,” said Lt. Col. Murray. “It says a lot about who you are and what you represent, and I’m truly honored to stand up here with you.”

Following the presentation of the certificates and an encore performance by the band, Nathan Lee autographed copies of their album containing all the songs they played throughout the evening, and reiterated his own gratitude for soldiers deployed in Iraq.

“We’re so grateful to be here playing for the soldiers, it means so much to us what you’re doing over,” he said.
First Class Rudder and Staff Sgt. Rochan Turner were conducting a routine route clearance mission on a sweltering summer afternoon in Afghanistan when Sgt. First Class Rudder indicated a potential hazard ahead in the convoy’s path. Upon closer inspection, Sgt. First Class Rudder’s initial inclination proved correct as two mortars rigged to an improvised explosive device were unearthed from the roadway, preventing approximately 20 vehicles from suffering catastrophic damage.

The most impressive aspect of the situation was the fact that Sgt. First Class Rudder was a Labrador retriever trained as a Specialized Search Dog, operating off of his leash up to 100 meters away from his handler, Staff Sgt. Rochan Turner. This dynamic duo has been working together for about four and a half years, placing them in countless situations similar to that in Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Rochan Turner, a Houston, Texas native, is the kennel master attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters Operations Company, 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. Staff Sergeant Turner manages K9 teams at Forward Operating Base Warhorse, FOB Edge and Contingency Operating Base Cobra, ensuring each team has the tools and training necessary to accomplish their missions. He also acts as the advisor to the 2nd Stryker Advise and Assist Brigade, 25th Infantry Division Provost Marshal in utilizing K9 teams as an asset.

Warriors from the 2SAAB, 25th ID assisted dog handlers and trainers in conducting coalition training with Iraqi Police (IP) K9 teams July 20, in an attempt to train IPs on the latest U.S. Army Military Police (MP) tactics based around working dogs. This training covered basic commands and what they do, recognizing changes in the dog’s behavior and what those changes may indicate.

After the training, Lt. Col. John Shattuck, the Diyala provincial police team chief from the Stability Transition Team, 2SAAB, 25th ID, and Capt. Maurice Mckinney, the Provost Marshal for 2SAAB, 25th ID, discussed ways the brigade could support IP forces and assist in improving their overall readiness to assume complete control of all missions following the American transition to contingency operations within the region.

“We talked about near-future goals and long-term projects the brigade could assist the IPs with,” said Capt. Mckinney. “Capt. Moufaq, the canine manager for the Diyala Provincial Police Headquarters, mentioned needing a canine training area with obstacles, and the construction of that kind of training pen is something we would assist with.”

Laying this foundation and strengthening familiarization in core training is vital in order to realize the potential the working dog program has, as IPs have just recently embraced the idea of utilizing canines for counter-insurgency purposes.

“Iraqi Police forces have only been using K9 teams for a few years, so it’s important we train them right,” said Staff Sgt. Turner.

Before they have the opportunity to assist in teaching IP K9 teams, U.S. Army canines must complete “basic training” at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, introducing them to odors and basic commands. Handlers learn how to observe and properly react to changes in the dog’s behavior as well as techniques for instilling obedience.

Once training is completed, K9 teams receive specific orders, sending them to units in-theater to support that unit’s mission. A typical deployment for a K9 team ranges from six to 12 months.

“We train for war every day,” said Staff Sgt. Turner. “We can get the call at any time and then we move out with those orders.” (GOOD FOR PULLED QUOTE IN LAYOUT)

In order to effectively augment each unit during a deployment, certain dogs have extended skill sets. Specialized Search Dogs can travel up to 150 meters off the leash. Handlers use voice commands, and hand and arms signals to communicate with the dogs. Patrol Explosive Dogs specialize in sniffing out a variety of materials used in the construction of explosive devices.

When a K9 team is not deployed, they are still training. There are countless certifications that handlers and their dogs can obtain, in addition to the mandatory annual certifications that require handlers to update their dog’s odor recognition set.

The canines are hydrated often and fed food rich in protein in order to maintain the energy and acute awareness necessary to effectively carry out their missions. Handlers often stockpile food prior to deployments, and can order more as their supplies dwindle.

Interestingly enough, Staff Sgt. Turner said a portion of the Iraqi population doesn’t like dogs and views them as dirty animals, though it depends largely upon the region and the prominence of Western influence. All members of the Iraqi Police force that are trained to work with canines, however, have a deep appreciation for their animals. U.S. Army dog handlers often stress the importance of developing a strong bond with the dogs.

“We teach the IPs that it’s important to love the dog, to take care of it. The biggest reward for the dog is love,” Staff Sgt. Turner said. “Everything the dog does is done to please the handler.”

All work and no play makes for anxious, exhausted hounds. Between missions and training exercises, handlers understand the importance of letting their dogs off the leash for some quality playtime.

“We give them breaks,” said Staff Sgt. Turner. “Before we train, we let them run around and play and just be dogs.”

Staff Sergeant Turner said the most rewarding part of his job is the constant companionship found in his loyal buddy, Rudder, a feeling shared by many dog handlers.

“I love working with him,” Staff Sgt. Turner beamed. “He’s a good boy, a hard worker and he doesn’t talk back.”

The flag lowered, and the two Soldiers reach for the flag. Two sets of hands roll the flag up, securing the streamers tightly against the flagpole. A cloth sheath slides over the bundle, and the flag is raised back to its upright position. A second flag is lowered and the sheath is removed, and as the arid Iraqi air greets the new flag, a second pair of Soldiers salutes the flag and returns to their seats.

The outgoing unit has just transferred authority of the region to the incoming unit.

“We feel very satisfied in many of the things we’ve been able to do this year,” said Col. David E. Funk, the brigade commander for 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, delving into the working relationships he and his command group fostered with their Iraqi counterparts, the progressive economic development in the province and the training he and his Soldiers provided the Iraqi Security Forces.

Soldiers from 3rd SBCT, 2nd ID, “Arrowhead,” began arriving in theater August 2009 during the Muslim holiday of Ramadan, relieving 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Regiment of their command of the Diyala province. Maj. Jonathan Burnett, the officer in charge of Intelligence Operations for #rd SBCT, 2nd ID, said initial information gathered on the region showed possible government corruption as well as increasing unrest of local extremist groups.

In addition to these issues, the removal of U.S. armed forces from all cities, towns and villages complicated the integration process, hindering 3rd SBCT, 2nd ID, leaders from meeting with their Iraqi counterparts and laying the foundation for a successful deployment.

“Due to the removal of forces from cities and villages, our first mission was to redevelop relationships with Iraqi Security Forces by partnering with the Provincial Joint Coordination Cell and the 5th Iraqi Army Division in order to ensure success in joint operations and a prosperous future for the region,” Maj. Burnett said.

The Arrowhead brigade experienced indirect and small-arms fire on numerous occasions throughout their deployment as sectarian tensions mounted between zealous Shia and Sunni extremist groups, which led 3rd SBCT, 2nd ID to increase security precautions during joint patrols with Iraqi forces.

“One of the most important times for us was during the national elections,” Maj. Burnett said. “We worked alongside our Iraqi counterparts in beefing up ground security in addition to providing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle support.”

Major Burnett said the Warrior brigade can expect to deal with increased tensions coming out of the elections, and with the forming of the new Iraqi government. He also said it will be a delicate situation, but with heightened security and unrelenting situational awareness, 2nd SBCT, 25th ID should see the mission accomplished by the end of the deployment.

“My recommendation for the incoming brigade is to be flexible, be adaptive, be agile, and if whatever you’re doing isn’t working, change it,” Col. Funk said. “Don’t be afraid to try new and different things, and don’t be afraid to adjust on the fly if you need to in order to make new things happen.”

Colonel Malcolm B. Frost, the brigade commander for 2nd SBCT, 25th ID, acknowledged the challenges that the brigade anticipates during the upcoming year, but is optimistic overall about his Warriors’ ability to rise to and overcome these challenges.

“As you know, we are a Stryker brigade combat team,” Col. Frost began. “But we are an advise and assist brigade and we have trained toward that mindset so we can assist, advise, train and equip the Iraqi Security Forces and then support our Provincial Reconstruction Team, our State Department, the USA, United Nations and other non-governmental organizations as they take the lead in providing the stability for the government of Iraq through elements such as governance, economics, infrastructure, essential services, health and education.”

“As Stryker brigades, we are a unique community,” Maj. Burnett concluded. “And I couldn’t think of a better unit to be relieving us.”
First Class Rudder and Staff Sgt. Rochan Turner were conducting a routine route clearance mission on a sweltering, summer afternoon in Afghanistan when Sgt.

He also acts as the advisor to the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division Provost Marshal in utilizing K9 teams as an asset.

Warriors from the 2SBCT, 25th ID (AAB) assisted dog handlers and trainers in conducting coalition training with Iraqi Police (IP) K9 teams July 20, in an attempt to train IPs on the latest U.S. Army Military Police (MP) tactics based around working dogs. This training covered basic commands and what they do, recognizing changes in the dog’s behavior and what those changes may indicate.

After the training, Lt. Col. John Shattuck, the Diyala provincial police team chief from the Stability Transition Team, 2SBCT, 25th ID (AAB), and Capt. Maurice Mckinney, the Provost Marshal from 2SBCT, 25th ID, discussed ways the brigade could support IP forces and assist in improving their overall readiness to assume complete control of all missions following the American transition to contingency operations within the region.

“It was about setting aside a place for families to connect with their Soldiers in a comfortable environment,” said Emily Harrison, the battalion FRG support assistant for 2-11.

The room is visually appealing giving it a more welcoming atmosphere. New couches are positioned near the flat-screen television which plays DVDs, giving spouses a way to entertain their children. If the movies don’t suffice, there are plenty of toys to choose from as well. A vibrant mural of Molly Pitcher, painted by Sgt. Ray Duffy of Headquarters Battery, 2-11 depicts Pitcher assisting artillerymen on a battlefield.

A faded blanket with the 2-11 crest sewn as the centerpiece hangs by the door, proudly displaying the names of each battery in the battalion as well as “King of Battle!”, the Field Artillery motto. The blanket’s vintage appearance suggests a unit rich with history and esprit de corps. Pictures from recent events the battalion has participated in rest on a shelf above a row of computers, showing pride for the unit still runs deep to this day.

Three computers sit on a desk against the wall with webcams and video-chat capabilities through a program called Skype that will allow family members to communicate face to face with their deployed Soldiers. The custom desk was assembled from scratch by Sgt. First Class Paul Dyess, the Rear Detachment Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge (NCOIC), and Spec. Brady West from B Battery, 2-11.

Though it was quite a group effort, with support from battery FRG advisors and soldiers within the battalion, Maj. Mark Sherkey, the JOB TITLE for 2-11, oversaw the entire project every step of the way. The battalion Supply shop (S4) and the Communications shop (S6) also assisted in providing equipment and connectivity of electronics.

The room is open to all family, friends and supporters of the battalion. Hours of operation are still being negotiated, but usage is unlimited provided that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the amenities.

Harrison said the concept for the Yellow Ribbon Room has seen practical application throughout the brigade since 2006, however not all units had them. She also said that a lot of discussion went into planning where the room would be and what the finished product would look like, but once a plan of action was put together the whole process only took about two months.

The FRG has ideas for a second, separate room that would be ideal for meetings such as bible study or various support groups. This second room would also have an adjacent playroom to keep children entertained while spouses or other family members are busy. Plans for this room will remain on the backburner until the battalion departs the island.

Projects like 2-11’s Yellow Ribbon Room show just how important family is to Soldiers from all units in the brigade. Commanders and junior enlisted alike know that there will be difficult times during the upcoming deployment, but communication with loved ones will keep morale high, help Soldiers accomplish their missions and come home safely.
